Honey Bee Natural History, Biodiversity, Conservation, and Ecology

We attempt to understand wild honey bee ecology and genetic diversity/structure in an effort to sustain honey bee populations through informed conservation efforts. We are keenly interested in the health of endemic populations of honey bees, particularly in southern Africa. We are focused on understanding the nest ecology, ecosystem contributions, natural history, and biodiversity of wild honey bees.

Current Projects

  • Methods for identifying races of honey bees (genome sequencing, microsatellites, morphometrics, etc.),
  • Colony natural history (colony density, nesting habits, etc.)
  • Interactions between honey bees and other species
