Song: Weissman and Gray (2019) described the song as a slow chirp with usually 3-5 pulses per chirp (range 3-6), 120-160 chirps per minute. Pulse rate 16.5-22.7 at 25°C.
Identification: A key to the adult males of native US Gryllus is in Weissman and Gray (2019).

Habitat: Short oaks and other trees, various shrubs, sotol, and cactus were at the type locality.
Life cycle: Apparently one generation per year though laboratory cultures indicated a possibility for two generations. No obligate egg diapause.
Season: Overwinter as mid-late instars and the first adults appear in mid-May.
Name derivation: Named for its association with the sotol shrub.
