The meal moth larva feeds on flour, meal, damaged grain and seeds and is found in damp locations. Common in flour mills, it prefers damp and spoiled flour and grain. Besides feeding, it contaminates grains with silky webbing which may clog mill machinery. It is worldwide in distribution.

The adult moth has a wingspan of about 22 mm. The base and apex of the of the forewing are reddish brown with the middle portion pale. The dirty grey larva is about 25 mm long when fully grown.
