An oscillogram displays the intensity of sound as a function of time. These two oscillograms show 34 milliseconds (about 1/30 sec.) of calling for each of the two species. Each time a calling mole cricket moves his wings together, the stridulatory file and scraper engage and a pulse of sound is produced. No sound is produced on the return stroke. Two pulses of Neoscapteriscus borelli (Giglio-Tos) song and five pulses of Neoscapteriscus vicinus (Scudder) song are captured in the oscillograms, because their wing-stroke rates are 50 and 130 per second respectively.
