Research Responsibilities
- Conducts research on the bionomics and control of hemipterous
insect pests of palms, cycads, and other tropical ornamental and
native plants.
- Conducts research on insect transmission of lethal yellowing
of palms.
Teaching Responsibilities
Teaches Principles of Entomology (ENY 3005), Tree and Shrub Insects
(ENY 3541), and Tropical Horticultural Entomology (ENY 3536),
which are offered in the Environmental Horticultural Academic
Program at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center.
Accomplishments
- Maintenance of selected ground cover has been developed as
a method of managing populations of Myndus crudus (Homoptera:
Cixiidae), a vector of lethal yellowing of palms.
- The bionomics of mahogany webworm (Macalla thyrsisalis),
mahogany shoot borer (Hypsipyla grandella) and mahogany
leaf miner (Phyllocnistis meliacella), three insect pest
species of mahoganies (Swietenia spp.), have been elucidated
and control methods with biorationals have been developed for
all three.
