AFRI-BEE-CAP: How parasite loads and increasing pesticide residues affect colony health and longevity

*This is a nationwide research project to monitor varying conditions around the country and further understand colony collapse disorder. Apiaries are disbursed throughout 7 states, each representing different climatic conditions:

  • CA - Moderate temperatures, semi-arid
  • FL - Cool winter, hot & humid summer
  • ME - Cold winter, cool summer
  • MN - Very cold winter, warm summer
  • PA - Cold winter, warm/wet summer
  • TX - Mild winter, hot & dry summer
  • WA - Cold winter, semi-arid moderate summer

Status:

This project is the basis of the newly formed Florida Varroa Research Consortium. Five projects are planned in this area. The first which is currently being tested is varying concentrations of formic acid strips in varroa mite control.
