DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a 12-month non-tenure-accruing faculty position of three-years’ duration that will be 100% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station), available in the Department of Entomology & Nematology, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida.It is anticipated that this position will become a tenure-accruing faculty position at the end of the three-year period.This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit.The candidate will spend 70% of his/her time investigating the potential of novel low-molecular weight compounds as insecticides, including modes of action and degradation, and 30% of the time on his/her own research in insect toxicology/biochemistry.The candidate should demonstrate a willingness to teach by giving guest lectures and offering seminar courses in his/her area of expertise.The candidate will have the opportunity and is encouraged to participate in graduate education by serving on graduate committees, supervising undergraduate and graduate research, and publishing the results with students.Implementation of the Affirmative Action program of the University of Florida is required. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in insect toxicology or a closely related field, with a strong background in insect biochemistry and physiology, is required.Skills in analytical chemistry and instrumentation are required and experience with molecular biology techniques is highly desirable.Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding.Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Department of Entomology & Nematology is a unit in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the University of Florida and has diverse teaching, research and extension education programs with 32 faculty members located on the Gainesville campus, 40 faculty located across the state at research and education centers, 100 courtesy faculty and 40 support personnel. The University of Florida is a Land-Grant institution with an enrollment in excess of 43,000 students on the Gainesville campus and a member of the Association of American Universities. IFAS includes 20 academic units, 5 interdisciplinary centers, 14 research and educational centers throughout the state, and Cooperative Extension units in each of Florida’s 67 counties and the Seminole Tribe. IFAS, one of the nation’s largest agricultural and natural resources research and education organizations, is administered by a Vice President and five deans: the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Dean for Extension, the Dean for Research, the Dean for the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Dean for the College of Natural Resources and Environment. Facilities available to support the candidate’s research include the Analytical Toxicology Core Laboratory, the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnological Research (ICBR), the neurophysiology core at the School of Pharmacy, Brain Core and Whitney Lab, and the USDA laboratories.
