Cooperative Ph.D. with Florida A& M University
Florida A&M University (FAMU), located in Tallahassee,
is Florida¹s 1890 Land Grant University. FAMU does not have legislative
authority for a Ph.D.
program in Entomology, but has faculty with considerable entomological
expertise -- particularly in the areas of aquatic entomology, biological
control and public health entomology. In an effort to increase the numbers
of minority graduate students in entomology, a cooperative Ph.D. program
in entomology was begun between FAMU and the University of Florida. Students
entering the program must meet U.F.¹s Ph.D. admission requirements
and must be admitted by both schools. Qualified FAMU faculty have been
granted Courtesy and Graduate Faculty appointments at U.F. These faculty
along with U.F. faculty serve as supervisory committee members with a FAMU
faculty member serving as the chair. Students in the program may take graduate
courses at either institution and must meet all of U.F.¹s requirements
for the Ph.D. degree.
Upon completion of the degree, the student is awarded a diploma that
recognizes the cooperative degree with both U.F. and FAMU on the diploma.
Efforts are underway to recruit students to the program. The first PhD
graduating from this collaborative effort was awarded in 2004.
