Course Description:Lecture schedule (tentative)
Introduction to Insect Parasitic Nematodes.
Historical review. Type of relationships between insects and nematodes.
Parasitic adaptation of the nematodes: External and internal
parasitisms. How to find nematodes. How to confirm parasitism of a
nematode. Safety of EPNs. Effect on beneficial insects.
Nematode distribution and survey methods
Order Tylenchida: Families Allantonematidae, Sphaerulariidae,
Iotonchidae, Parasitylenchidae, and Fergusobiidae.
Mermithida, Aphelenchida , Oxyurida.
Midterm examination
Diplogasterida and Rhabditida: Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae.
Life cycle and pathogenicity.
Symbiotic bacteria. Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus
An example of a successful insect control using EPN: Steinernema
scapterisci on mole crickets
Strategies for infection of host: Ambusher, Cruiser, Continuum.
Movement and Survival.
DNA, phylogeny.
Significance of insect parasitic nematodes.
Review.
Final examination
Paper and presentation: a topic will be given to each student
to prepare for a presentation in the class.

One midterm exam, 30%, final exam, 40%, and a paper +
presentation 30%.
