Course Description: An introduction to nematology including morphology, anatomy, life histories, and ecology of selected nematode parasites of plants, insects, and vertebrates. Some attention will be given to biological, chemical, and cultural control of plant-parasitic nematodes, and to using insect-parasitic nematodes to control insects.
Objectives and Goals: For the student to become acquainted with some of the nematodes that inhabit the soil, freshwater, and saltwater, and those that parasitize plants, animals, and man. The student will learn their morphology, anatomy, and major taxonomic categories. By the end of the course, the student should be able to recognize a few genera of nematodes and to identify many others to Order.
Topics to be Covered
Prerequisites: None
Textbook: The recommended (not required) textbook is The World of Nematodes, 1991, David R. Viglierchio, University of California, Davis. The student should read the pages in the text that correspond to the lectures and laboratory exercises (see printed syllabus).
Assignments and Methods by which the Student will be Evaluated and Grades Determined: Prior to a lecture, or at least before the next lecture, each student should read the pages in the recommended textbook that correspond to the lectures and laboratory exercises.
Grading: The final grade will be determined from two lecture examinations and the final examination @ 25% each, midterm papers @ 12.5% and final papers @ 12.5%.

A = 90-100%
B+ = 85-89%
B = 80-84%
C+ = 75-79%
C = 70-74%
D+ = 65-69%
D = 60-64%
F = <60%
Critical Dates for Exams or Other Work: There will be three examinations, one after completing the introductory portion of the class, covering that material, one after completing the portion on plant-parasitic nematodes, covering that material only, and the final examination, which will cover the entire course material. In addition, there will be term projects due in the laboratory portion of this course. Please see the printed syllabus for scheduled dates of exams. On each examination in this class, if not specified in writing, it is implied by the student that: "On my honor, I pledge that I have neither given nor received assistance in the completion of this test."
Policy Related to Class Attendance: Each students is expected to attend all lectures and laboratory periods. Active student participation, especially in the laboratory, is essential.
Policy Related to Make-Up Exams or Other Work: Scheduled examinations missed for reasons other than illness must be approved prior to the scheduled examination. These examinations must be made up, if possible, prior to the next class meeting, but no later than prior to the second class meeting after the scheduled examination. Scheduled examinations missed due to illness must be made up within 7 days after the scheduled examination. Please notify the instructor that you are ill prior to the examination. Make-up examinations will be different than scheduled examinations.
Class Demeanor Expected by Instructor: Class will begin and end on time. Therefore, please do not arrive late or leave early. Talking during lectures will not be tolerated unless asking or answering a question. Cell phones, beepers, or other noise-makers must be turned off prior to entering the classroom. UF rules prohibit your having food or drink in the classroom, and use of any form of tobacco products in the classroom is prohibited. Repeat offenders of any of the above will have 5 points subtracted from their final grade.
