Course Description: An introduction to tropical insects with emphasis on natural history, ecology and behavior.

Objectives and Goals: Students will learn about insects in natural ecosystems and in agroecosystems.

Topics to be Covered

• In this laboratory, early in "Summer B" (early July), students will visit a tropical country and will be shown the insect fauna of various natural ecosystems and agroecosystems. Each student will select in advance a small project to be accomplished in the field during the trip. Students will interact with faculty members and students of the host institution (Universidad Central de Venezuela), and will entomologize in natural and agricultural habitats. The instructor wants students to know that they will be encountering nature in the wild (i.e., without air-conditioning), but that thought has been given to security and expectations. Duration of trip is currently 10 days. Cost of trip in 2001 was approximately $850 but the price is subject to inflation. This amount includes: rental car for transportation to and from Miami airport, airfare, ground transportation in Venezuela, catered meals and accommodations at Rancho Grande (destination), and airport departure tax. Anything else, such as roadside refreshments or postcards, etc., is extra.

Prerequisites: ENY 3563/5566 (Lecture - offered "Summer A")

Textbook: None. Required readings will be presented as low-resolution Adobe Acrobat .PDF files on a temporary class web site.

Assignments and Methods by which the Student will be Evaluated and Grades Determined: Grades are based on field projects: (a) the student's verbal account of the project, delivered to the other students during the final day of the trip, and (b) a written report to be submitted after return to the USA and at least ten days before the end of "Summer B."

Grading Scale:
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
E = <60%

Critical Dates for Exams or Other Work: Please see the printed syllabus for scheduled dates of exams. Students will be expected to sign the following statement on all exams: "On my honor I pledge that I have neither given nor received assistance in the completion of this test."

Policy Related to Class Attendance: Students are expected, but not required, to attend all class sessions.

Policy Related to Make-Up Exams or Other Work: Make-up exams will be allowed only in the event of an emergency (such as a death in the family) or personal illness. Such emergency or illness must be documented. The student must inform instructor ahead of time that he/she will miss an exam.

Class Demeanor Expected by Instructor: Please be considerate of your classmates. Also, keep in mind that, in many ways, you are an ambassador for UF and the USA, so think about your behavior.
