Meeting convened at 10:00 AM

Faculty from Ft. Pierce and Ft. Lauderdale participated via polycom, and starting in September we will connect to all sites that wish to participate for all faculty meetings.

Capinera introduced John Byatt from the Office of Technology and Licensing (OTL) who presented an update on patents and licenses. The information that he presented is on the web under the OTL site - www.otl. He stated that licenses and patents was one of the largest revenues for the UF. He went through the steps to be taken in order to get a patent. It could take as much as $10,000 to get a patent issued. Revenue is not the only benefit for licensing - it is getting the information out to the public, acquiring the technology and prestige for UF. John said that if you have any questions please give him a call (392-8929) or email him at jbaytt@ufl.edu. He stated that no matter how simple your invention may be, the licensing office would like to hear about it and help you. John also stated you need to remember that anything that is invented while you are employed at UF belongs to UF. The confidentiality statement means that this information is not for publication. If you do not sign a confidentiality statement when submitting your information for licensing you still have time before the patent is issued. If you have any questions please give OTL a call.

Faculty voted on Dr. Hyun-Woo Park from FAMU for Affiliate and Graduate Faculty status. Vote was unanimous.

Capinera passed out the position announcement for the Apiculture/Youth faculty position to be released soon. The search committee met and recommended that the search be broader to include someone that does not have a Ph.D. The Deans did not agree so the search will be for someone with a Ph.D., and if we do not find anyone we will search again and require only a M.S. degree. Question was raised about the FTE distribution. Discussion followed. Capinera stated that if we find that this FTE distribution does not work it could be adjusted later. Question was also raised about the youth portion of the position. Capinera stated that this person would be involved in 4-H and other youth programs in the schools, in part to encourage students to consider a career in entomology/nematology.

Capinera passed out information on each faculty's budget for 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. He stated that Sharon has developed an internal program that she has been working on so that the faculty can receive a monthly report. Some of the faculty may see a larger amount in their grant account than they expected due to the fact that some funds were left over at the end of the year and Sharon bought needed supplies with the state funds rather than depleting their grant funds.

There will be an LCD projector installed on the ceiling of room 2216 during the summer break. Unlike room 3118 where we have a secure place to store a laptop, we lack that facility in 2216, so you will still have to use your own computer or check one out from the main office.

Heather McAuslane reported that the Landscape Committee met and there will be some trees planted along the front. The ground cover along the sides of the building that is not working will also be removed. Don Hall reported that there is poison ivy in the courtyard.

Capinera announced that there would be no faculty meeting in August.

Meeting adjourned at 11:15
